Chronic Aches and Pains

Pain can be a very debilitating condition. Sometimes pain is unrelenting and the sufferer's life is severely disrupted. Some people are unable to work or function normally and their lives due to chronic pain. The cause of most chronic pain is not clear but many involve chronic musculoskeletal disorders and nerve problems that are sometimes compounded by psychological issues.

Typical treatments for chronic pain include "painkiller" drugs, over-the-counter pain relievers, nerve medicines and sometimes exercise. In some cases, nerve blocks or surgery are recommended. Once pain has become chronic, it is often difficult to cure.

Dr. Doyle's approach is to first recognized that hormones such as thyroid hormones and cortisol can play a major role in chronic pain. It is well-known that hypothyroidism can cause muscle or joint pain and that cortisol deficiency can also cause joint pain. Replacing these hormones in appropriate physiologic amounts can go a long way to reducing chronic pain. The key is to maintain a healthy balance among all hormones especially thyroid and adrenal hormones. Some nutrients and herbal treatments also show significant benefit in cases of chronic pain. Alternative modalities such as chiropractic and acupuncture should also be considered along with psychological counselling to reduce stress.
