Constipation

Chronic constipation is a serious and common medical problem that can be related to nutritional or hormonal problems. Chronic constipation can easily be caused by medications or supplements. In particular, narcotic medications cause constipation. Iron and calcium supplements also cause constipation in many cases. Hormonal problems such as hypothyroidism may cause constipation-- sometimes as a lifelong pattern. Neurologic problems stemming from diabetes or autoimmune disease or other conditions may also cause constipation.

Typical treatment for constipation includes the use of fiber supplements such as bran or laxative medication. Unfortunately, this approach does nothing to address any underlying causes and can in fact cause problems of its own. In particular this type of fiber has mineral binding effects that can have negative nutritional consequences. Fluctuations in female hormones have also been known to cause temporary constipation.

Dr. Doyle's approach to constipation focuses on identifying the underlying cause and then reversing that cause such as treating hypothyroidism or adjusting supplements. Dr. Doyle sometimes uses specific fiber supplements but more commonly uses extremely safe vitamins and minerals that have laxative effects. He also believes that fluid intake and physical exercise are important tools in managing constipation.
