Depression and Dysthymia

Depression and dysthymia are disorders of mood. Depression is a change in mood that lasts for months. Depression is characterized by a low or irritable mood and a loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities. It interferes with normal day-to-day functioning and often includes physical symptoms such as fatigue or changes in appetite or sleep patterns. Dysthymia is a milder and longer lasting form of depression. Millions of Americans are diagnosed with major depression every year. The causes are complex but include genetic and environmental factors. Hormones and medications play important roles in many cases. Also, vitamin deficiencies, medications and substance abuse have been shown to contribute to depression.

The typical conventional approach to depression involves psychiatric/psychological evaluation with a brief medical screening. Treatment relies primarily on antidepressant pharmaceuticals and counseling.

Dr. Doyle's approach to dealing with depression and dysthymia starts with a comprehensive medical evaluation that includes assessment of lifestyle hormonal and nutritional factors that may be contributing to the mood disorder. Treatment typically starts with lifestyle changes including recommendations for exercise. Any identified nutritional or hormonal deficits such as low thyroid low estrogen or low testosterone is treated. Similarly, nutritional deficiencies of B vitamins or vitamin D are treated. Safe herbal and nutritional treatments are often used also. Counseling focused on brief cognitive behavioral therapy is recommended in many cases. Prescription antidepressants are sometimes used and referral for psychiatric evaluation and treatment is recommended in the most severe or resistant cases.
